Maple shells with its performance proven through the numerous DCI championships and High percussion awards won by Yamaha supported marching ensembles, has been chosen for the shells. Original Yamaha high-pressure air bag shell forming technology creates maple shells that exhibit sharp attack and wide dynamic range for complex, expressive sound.
In addition to an aluminum insert ring inside the shell (on all except the 6” model), large washers are provided below the lugs to allow high-tension tuning. Shell deformation is prevented, and pitch remains stable.
The shell is notably deeper than normal, for stunning power and projection.
All Yamaha marching multi-toms are made using Yamaha's patented Air-Seal System which ensures that the shells start round and stay round: an in-round shell tunes clearer and provides a pure fundamental tone.
The 45° bearing edge allows each drum to speak clearly creating precise articulation.
7-ply 6” and 8” drums and 6-ply 10” to 14” maple shells enhance mid-range tone. A high-strength, aluminum reinforcement ring inserted just below the bearing edge maintains shell integrity. This exclusive Yamaha design allows for extreme, high-tension tuning without the risk of warping. Additionally, since the wood bearing edge of the drum, not the reinforcement ring, contacts the drum head, a quality transfer of vibration energy occurs offering a pure and consistent sound.
The 7-ply maple shell on the 6" multi-tom (MQ-8306) maintains shell integrity without a reinforcement ring and clearly projects upper register tuning.
The light, die-cast aluminum lugs are designed with a unique arch-shaped center. This Yamaha original design decreases surface to surface contact between the shell and lug permitting the shell to vibrate freely. This in turn results in greater tone production. The 8300 lug designs are 50% lighter and 12% stronger than the 8100 lug design. The arched lug design allows the shell to breathe while reducing weight.
5.4mm steel tension rods provide easy, consistent tuning without adding unnecessary weight. Double steel washers allow for a smooth tuning adjustment at any tension level.
The 2.3mm steel Ultra Hoops with unique inward profile help protect the bearing edge from mallet sweeps. The rims also ensure true tuning and shape retention, even under extreme tension and heavy rim shots.
Field-Corps multi-toms are available in multiple configurations including small and large trios, quads, quints, and standard sextets as well as the new Yamaha SUMO toms. The SUMO configurations feature a flat-cut 8" tom that can be used to replace the 6" drum in both quints (MQT-80234) and sextets (MQT-680234). SUMO toms are available only with the RM-TVHBPT Biposto Tenor Carrier and RM-68 6/8 spacer set by May™.
This head is an ideal choice for high tension tuning, bringing out the full resonance of the shell.
